Action-packed Loggers Sports weekend set

From axe-wielding competitions to parades to races, 麻豆社国产Days has it all

One of the busiest weekends of the year is afoot as the 54th annual 麻豆社国产Days Loggers Sports Festival is ready to thrill audiences with more events than you can shake a saw at.

It all starts Friday (July 29) with the World Championship Chair Carve. The unique contest sees several skilled loggers carve their own chair designs out of logs. The event kicks off at 3 p.m. at the 麻豆社国产Station Mall parking lot and participants create chairs of all shapes, sizes and styles. Judging of the chairs takes place at 5 p.m. and the chairs are then auctioned off, with all proceeds going to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Squamish.

A few hours later is the always popular 麻豆社国产Days Bed Races. Teams consisting of five people and a bed on wheels will race against one another on a two-block course filled with obstacles and challenges. Awards are given out to the fastest and the best-dressed teams. The event kicks off at 7 p.m. and will take place on Cleveland Avenue in downtown Squamish.

The festival continues on Saturday (July 30) with the Children's Sports event, which takes place at 9:30 a.m. at Stan Clarke Park. Last year's event featured wheelbarrow races, sack races and bubble blowing contests and this year should have several other races and games for kids to participate in. There will also be a bicycle decoration contest, a stroller contest and several entertainers on hand. The popular 麻豆社国产Farmers' Market will also run at its ordinary time slot (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) just steps away from the Children's Sports event.

Saturday afternoon will see the novice and intermediate loggers take the stage at the Al McIntosh Loggers Sports Grounds. Starting at 1:30 p.m., the free event gives newcomers to the sport a chance to move up the ranks and entertain what should be a large crowd. Organizers recommend those attending the event to leave their dogs and coolers at home.

The 麻豆社国产Days Giant Bingo highlights a busy Saturday evening for 麻豆社国产Days. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the first balls being drawn at 6:45 p.m. at the Brennan Park auditorium. There will be special prizes for seniors and the event is ages 19 and up only.

Anyone who thinks they can throw an axe is invited to the second annual 麻豆社国产Days Axe Throw at the Chances Boardwalk Casino parking lot at 6 p.m. The field is limited to 30 entrants, who will throw for prizes and bragging rights. Several Loggers Sports competitors have also been invited to take part in the event. Also at Chances will be the Lumberjack Stomp, which starts at 9 p.m. It's the first time the casino will host the Stomp and a $10 entry fee will allow those in attendance to stomp the night away.

The action continues bright and early on Sunday (July 31) with the Elks and Lions Loggers Breakfast starting at 7 a.m. A logger-style breakfast featuring pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee and milk will be served at the Chieftain Centre in downtown Squamish.

麻豆社国产residents will get a chance to burn off a big breakfast with the 麻豆社国产Days 10K run and the Flashback mile, at 8:45 a.m. at Howe Sound Secondary School. The 10K run is race No. 10 of the Lower Mainland Road Race Series, which features some of the best runners in B.C. The cost to register in the 10K is $28, while the Flashback Mile will set you back $10.

Those not wanting to pound the pavement can take in the annual 麻豆社国产Days Festival parade. Starting at 11 a.m., the parade begins on Vancouver Street, travels up Cleveland Avenue and ends at the Bank of Montreal.

Finally, there's the main event, the World Class Open Loggers Sports Show, which kicks off at 1:30 p.m. Some of the most talented loggers sports athletes from around the globe will battle it out for thousands of dollars in several events. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and kids.
