Pirates ready to hit the water

Local swim club excited to begin summer schedule

The 麻豆社国产Pirates are swabbing the decks in preparation for the upcoming summer swim season starting on Monday (May 2).

This summer, the competitive swim club's members hope to spend more time with their teammates, improve their fitness and swimming ability, get a chance to swim with other swimmers from the B.C. Summer Swim Association (BCSSA) and most importantly, have fun.

The Pirates' mission is to encourage and support physical activity among 麻豆社国产children aged five to 18 by providing a developmental and competitive swim program in a comfortable, friendly environment.

Pirates president Larry Chappell said the summer will be a busy one for the young swimmers.

"Practices increase during the summer season with an emphasis on stroke refinement, speed training and race technique. These sessions are specially designed for each ability level in a supportive and encouraging environment," Chappell said.

"The Pirates also have the opportunity to participate in BCSSA meets in the Lower Mainland and there is an "away" swim meet on Vancouver Island. Swimmers can attend as many or as few meets they choose and if you're interested but not quite sure, new swimmers can test the waters in the 'May Try It Out' month."

The Pirates also announced their summer 2011 coaching crew, with returning coach Allyson Corbett taking over a new role as summer head coach. Corbett brings six years coaching with the BCSSA along with four years of coaching experience with the Pirates and is looking forward to the upcoming season.

New on deck is coach Jim Campbell, who has been coaching since 2005. Campbell has been involved with several different swimming groups, spending time coaching the North Vancouver Cruisers, the Vancouver Vikings and the UBC Dolphins. Returning to her role as junior coach is Squamish's own Sarah Dale, who started swimming with the Pirates seven years ago. Dale brings her level of swimming excellence to her role as junior coach and looks forward to inspiring and assisting with developing the swimming skills of our young Pirates.
