The Cloverdale Rodeo left the Sea to Sky Sirens with a few bruises but the team is pushing forward after another learning experience against a veteran club.
The team traveled to the 65th annual Cloverdale event to take on the Anarchy Angels in an event dubbed Cowgirls and Rollerskates. The two-day derby event saw both men's and women's teams compete at the Cloverdale Curling Club.
While the team dropped the bout 157 to 69 on Saturday (May 21), Sirens team member Kristi "Roxie Shocker" Anderson said the team had a great time.
"Our bout with the Angels of Anarchy was a great success," she told The Chief in an email. "We picked up two girls from the Doomsday Bunnies, Rogue Hazard and Ivona Masterskate as well as Nicoleon Dynamite from TCRG. They were all much-needed help when we were going up against such an experienced team.
"Our jammers for our first-ever bout included Ginger Van Detta, Tiny Sadist, Ivona Masterskate, Mala Justed and myself. With a full 14-girl roster as well as Baron Hurtie and Eyeful Towers assisting with coaching, our bench ran smoothly thanks to a great lineup and our coach Full of Hot Blair."
Anderson said the Sirens came out flat in the first half, falling behind by more than 70 points, but battled back in the second half.
"We pulled it together as a team [in the second half] and we had some phenomenal jams," she said. "I actually got my first Grand Slam, which is when you lap the other team's jammer. In the end we lost 157 to 69 but we gained some amazing experience as well as kicked some a-- in our first-ever official bout.
"Later on two of our girls, Mala Justed and Dimples Diablo, stayed on to play in a co-ed scrimmage. Some of our other teammates also helped with officiating and scorekeeping as it takes a lot of volunteers to run a bout."
Next up for the team will be the Squampton Summer Open Scrimmage, with the first of four sessions taking place on Sunday (May 29) from 4 to 7 p.m. The idea behind is to give the Sirens some more in-game experience and possibly recruit some new members. Registration is free but skaters must have passed a basic skills test and provide insurance to take part. The sessions are also taking place on June 12, June 26 and July 24, all at the Brennan Park Arena.
The team is also preparing for Nautical Annihilation, the Sirens' first home bout, which takes place on June 18 at 7 p.m. at Brennan Park Arena. The Harbour City Rollers are coming to town and tickets range in price from $7 to $10 depending on age. Tickets are available online at www.brownpapertickets.com, at Agnes Jean Boutique in downtown 麻豆社国产or the Diamond Head Fish Market in Garibaldi Highlands.
