Skin-deep loyalty

麻豆社国产resident tattoos himself with Canucks logo in anticipation of cup run

Vancouver Canucks fans have resorted to several different methods to show support for their team during this season's drive to win the Stanley Cup.

Flags are flying from many cars, Canucks merchandise can be spotted on sidewalks all over the province and one cannot forget the Spandex-clad "green men" who taunt opposing players in the sin bin.

However, one 麻豆社国产resident proved his loyalty to the team in a rather unique and ultimately permanent way. Carl Brown recently adorned his left upper arm with the Johnny Canuck V, along with the city name of Vancouver and the year the team was established.

"It was a long discussion with me and some of my close friends in my hockey pool," Brown said. "They know I'm the biggest Canucks fan of the bunch and I said if they win the cup this year I'll go ahead and get a Canucks tattoo done."

But excitement from the best regular season in club history and a good start to the team's first-round playoff series against the Chicago Blackhawks led Brown to move forward with the tattoo.

"I don't know if it was the great regular season or the hype of the first round, but I decided to get it done ahead of time," he said.

But Brown thought he almost jinxed the Canucks by getting the tattoo so early.

"When I got it, it was on a Tuesday morning and the Canucks were up 3-0 on Chicago," he said. "And they then proceeded to drop the next three games. It went from, 'Wow, that's really cool' to, 'You are a massive black curse.'"

Brown added that he was relieved when the Canucks finally vanquished the Hawks and got through Game 7. It's been a lifelong love affair with the Canucks for Brown, who works at White Spot and Mountain FM.

"My first conscious memory of the Canucks is that first round against Calgary in 1989," he said. "I remember my dad just being absolutely furious when the winning goal went in off of Joel Otto's skate and it was a steady progression for me from there. They mean something to my family and mean something to me."

Brown grew up in Langley and was nine during the Canucks' last Stanley Cup finals run in 1994, but he still remembers the ride.

"I remember being so excited after we beat Calgary in the first round," he said. "Me and my friends were throwing patio furniture off the deck, you didn't know what to do with your emotions. That was a milestone moment for childhood Canucks memories."

Brown pointed to Trevor Linden as his favourite Canuck, with defenceman Dan Hamhuis as his current favourite. Brown said he expects a rough go for the Canucks in their second-round battle with Nashville.

"It's going to be a tough series," he said. "It's going to go six or seven games, I guarantee it."

However, Brown said that if the Canucks do manage to hoist Lord Stanley's Cup that he will add some sort of acknowledgement of the win on his arm.

If the Canucks do make the finals, it might be a good idea for Brown to wait until Henrik Sedin lifts the silver cup before permanently inking his body. Laser removal is, apparently, rather pricey.
